VSP Vision care for life: Transitions® Healthy Sight Working For You

See Well to Work Well

Did you know that healthy sight is especially important for employee productivity?

People who can't see well can't do their jobs well. Headaches and fatigue from eyestrain can really hurt an employee's job performance. In fact, miscorrected vision — even when it is so slight that it is not even noticed — can reduce an employee's productivity up to 20 percent.

Cataracts

As your employees age, they will be at heightened risk for cataracts, which can impact their performance at work. A cataract is a clouding of the eye's lens. Of the 20 million people with cataracts, an estimated 20% may be due to UV.

Vision problems also lead to increased absenteeism. Workers with visual impairments are more likely to be dissatisfied with their jobs — and many may be absent from work more frequently to deal with the stress and fatigue caused by their vision problems. Even when present in the office, workers with these issues may work less efficiently, a phenomenon known as "presenteeism". Presenteeism results in 32 times more productivity losses than absenteeism alone, according to The Vision Council.

Are you letting healthy sight work for you by offering your employees the highest quality vision coverage to help them see their best today and in the future?

  • A recent survey conducted on behalf of Transitions Optical revealed that more than 9 out of 10 benefits professionals think their employees would be interested in learning about the value of regular eye exams.
  • 8 out of 10 benefits professionals think their employees would be interested in learning more about the value of photochromic lenses, AR coatings and lens materials.
  • 6 out of 10 benefits professionals and consumers believe they should be getting an eye exam every year. However, only half of benefits professionals say their plan includes coverage of an annual exam.

Computer Vision Syndrome

(CVS) is a common issue among employees at the office. It refers to the associated eye and vision problems resulting from excessive work on a computer.

Symptoms of CVS occur in 50 to 90 percent of workers who routinely use computers for work.

CVS symptoms can include:

  • Eyestrain
  • Fatigue
  • Headaches
  • Blurred Near Vision
  • Blurred Distant Vision
  • Dry or Irritated Eyes
  • Neck or Backaches
  • Diplopia
